“My real proving ground came when I transferred after graduation [from Essex], and I didn’t know what I had until I left. I was concerned about whether I’d be able to compete at the next level, but when I made the dean’s list my first semester I finally could exhale. I thought ‘Wow, Essex really set me up to succeed.’. . . Before I went to [Essex] I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. . . . I was a . . . wage worker. Essex gave me the turnaround I needed.”

“I’ve had a very successful career. I’m the superintendent for the Nutley Water and Sewer Department and it’s my 26th year there. I went back to school because I just felt that finishing college was what I wanted to do. Then, I realized it was something that could really help me in my career. In Spring of 2008, I began taking classes at Essex County College and took one or two classes at a time with the Evening and Weekend College.”
