Hugo Pierre was named head men’s soccer coach in 2008 after serving as assistant for a decade under longtime former coach Alphonse Prophete. An Essex County College alumnus, Pierre was a mid-fielder on the Wolverines’ highly successful teams in the mid-1980s. He grew up in Haiti, where he played soccer on several Haitian national teams.
After his playing days ended, Pierre has dedicated his career to coaching at both the college and high school levels. His first soccer job was as assistant coach at the now-closed Upsala College. He moved on as head coach at Essex Catholic High School (1992-93) followed by stops at Bloomfield College (as women’s coach 1993-96) and NJIT before returning to his alma mater in 1998.
Pierre also has considerable experience coaching youth soccer at virtually all levels of play. He has worked with youngsters in Newark, the Total Soccer Academy, the Cougar Soccer Club of Maplewood and South Orange, the Millburn Township Youth Summer Camps, the South Orange and Maplewood Soccer Academy and the TSF Academy. He led both boys and girls teams from Newark to gold medals during the 2006 United States Youth Games.
He resides in Maplewood with his wife and two sons.
