Humanities & Bilingual Studies
The Humanities & Bilingual Sciences Division encompasses art, cinema, communications, dance, drama, English composition, English literature, history, music, new media technology, philosophy, speech, and world languages.
It offers numerous A.A. and A.S. degree programs transferable to four-year institutions, and A.A.S. and certificate programs in preparation for immediate employment upon graduation.
The Division is responsible for general education courses in art, English, history, music, and world languages required by various degree programs. It also handles developmental courses in reading and writing – including English as a Second Language (ESL) courses – to assist students who are not yet fully prepared for college-level courses.
To supplement the classroom experience, the Humanities and Bilingual Studies faculty develop and support various cultural events and organizations to promote positive cultural awareness among students and the bilingual communities of Essex County.

Message from Chairperson James Freeman
The Humanities Division is home to the Liberal Arts, Humanities and Bilingual Studies degree programs, which provide a broad foundation in literature, languages, communications, history, art, journalism, and music. Core, general education courses in the Humanities and Bilingual Studies AA degree program open doors to employers interested in hiring Liberal Arts graduates with a solid and comprehensive education – in effect, a well-rounded education in the Humanities. The Liberal Arts AA program is also recommended to students who wish to attain foundational academic skills such as reading, writing, language, and critical thinking, before deciding upon a career. Our division is home to an array of fully transferrable Associate degree programs in the Liberal Arts and Sciences.
