The College celebrated National Heart Month with two initiatives making news. ECC hosted a full day Healthcare Roundtable February 26 with the theme “Affordable Healthcare for Everyone – Youth in Action: A Hip Hop Infused Experience.” The program was sponsored by Positive Community magazine as part of its Newark Leadership Roundtable Series. Barnabas Health was a partner, with celebrities Kevin Powell and Dr. Corey Hebert providing keynote presentations, while ECC Trustee Michellene Davis served as the day’s moderator.
With a major national pharmacy chain announcing it will no longer sell tobacco products, Dr. Joyce Wilson Harley, Vice President of Finance & Administration noted that ECC was a trailblazer of sorts on this important health matter. The College has been a smoke-free campus since July 2011 and subsequently stopped selling cigarettes at the Concession Stand.
“We saw the incongruity of selling cigarettes while at the same time banning their use on or near our campus,” recalled Dr. Harley.
