With a quick cut of the green and gold ribbon, Essex County College officially opened its LGBTQ+ Safe Zone Lounge on September 27. Dr. Zoya McCants, Clinical Director for Student Wellness Services, proudly performed the honors amid a round of applause outside the Lounge located in the Dasher Student Center.

Dr. McCants, who spearheaded the opening of the lounge, said the Safe Zone will offer a wide range of information and available resources, serve as a meeting place for workshops and group discussions, and be a quiet location to relax.

“As we fulfill our mission of STUDENTS FIRST, I’m pleased that we are opening this Safe Zone Lounge and creating the type of environment where valued and welcomed members of our community can and will feel safe,” said Essex County College President Dr. Anthony E. Munroe. “Our goal though, is to ensure that our entire campus is one big safe zone.”
