To enrich the experience and better understand the concepts taught in the classroom, the Supply Chain Management (SCM) students took to the road recently. They had the opportunity to take an educational tour of Fleet Distribution Center LLC, a Third Party Logistics (3PL) firm in nearby Harrison.
The students were accompanied by Business Division Chairperson Dr. Augustine Boakye, and Professors Germaine Albuquerque, and Professor Pavi Jalloh. The highly motivated students used the visit to make connections with theories learned in class vis a vis real world business practices.
Dr. Boakye said “Reading about supply chain is not the same as hands on experience which includes the process; the work environment and the machines in operation.” He added, “Our aim is to form industrial partners and provide real world experiences to our students.”
According to Dr. Boakye, the students saw the trip as a great experience in their educational journey and hoped that more of these educational field trips become an integral part of the SCM program.
At the Center, Mr. Alex Habbaz, CEO and Founder of the Fleet Distribution Center LLC, systematically highlighted the key functions of his organization. That included inventory management, warehousing operations, transportation, reverse logistics and distribution. He carefully explained the challenges of Third Party Logistics and shed new light to our students, of these aspects of the Supply Chain, as well as the opportunities and benefits of entrepreneurship.
“As the SCM program begins to take shape at Essex, we simultaneously encourage our students to demonstrate understanding and appreciate the ‘Value Added Services’ concept and how it is implemented in the business world,” said Professor Albuquerque.
