Both the Essex County college women’s and men’s soccer team captured Region XIX soccer titles, following a pair of shutouts this past Saturday. Both teams are now heading to the Northeast Division semi-finals in Division I of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
In defeating Sussex County Community College 3-0, the 10-1-1 Lady Wolverines successfully defended last year’s Region XIX title. Not to be outdone, the men, now 11-1, blanked Rowan College at Burlington County 1-0. Both games were held at Newark’s Weequahic Park.
The women, coached by Essex alumna Monique Edouard, now face Monroe College (New Rochelle, New York) this coming Saturday, November 3, at 2 p.m., also in Weequahic Park. The game will give the Lady Wolverines the opportunity to avenge their only defeat of the season.
Coach Dr. Richard Esposito’s men’s team will head to Massachusetts this Saturday, with the district semi-finals being hosted by Massasoit Community College (Brockton, Massachusetts). The opponent will be announced later this week.
In the win over Sussex, the Lady Wolverines received goals from Shanearay Wilkins, Lyla Lionel and Daniella Findley. Nicolette Craig recorded eight saves. “We definitely played our hearts out,” said Coach Edouard. The game was played in tough weather conditions, but we were ready for it.”
The men rode Walter Hernandez’s first half goal and the outstanding goal keeping of Matteo Geraci in capturing the regional title.
