Success on the Pitch and Track in Region XIX Competition

It was a banner weekend for Essex County College student-athletes, with the Women’s Soccer team advancing to the Region XIX title game and four Cross-Country standouts earning First Team All-Region XIX.

The Lady Wolverine Soccer team defeated rival Mercer 3-2 on Saturday, and will seek to defend its Region XIX crown when Coach Monique Edouard’s squad battles Sussex on November 2. That game will be played at the Temple University Sports Complex in Philadelphia.

Ashari Bowen netted all three goals in the win. She was assisted by Mahalia Garvey on two of the goals, with Shamika Marcus assisting on the third. Makida Herbert recorded nine saves in the win.

Dr. Richard Esposito, coach of the Men’s team, takes his National Junior College Athletic Association’s sixth ranked Wolverines into the Region XIX semi-finals on Wednesday, October 30. The Wolverines, also seeking to defend the regional title, will take on RCBC at 2:30 p.m., in Weequahic Park. A win on Wednesday will propel the team to the finals at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, also at Temple University.

The Men’s Cross Country team finished second at Saturday’s Region XIX championship held in Newark, Delaware. Navasky Anderson and David Oliveira finished one, two, earning First Team All-Region XIX honors.

On the Women’s side, Aaliyah Gordon came in third and India Norman placed seventh. They also earned First Team All-Region XIX honors. There was no team competition for the Women, only individual places.

Cross-Country Coach Lionel Leach was very pleased with the results. “It is gratifying that our student-athletes excelled and earned regional honors in the process.”
