Course Description: This is an advanced grammar course for students who have achieved a certain degree of fluency in their writing but still lack proficiency in their use of grammar. The goal of this course is to have students work on specific grammatical structures in the context of their own writing so that they can analyze and master them. The topics studied in the class focus on errors that are typical and give ESL students difficulty at the higher levels.
Course Goals: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:
- write compositions that target specific grammatical structures using acceptable essay format and with a high degree of correctness;
- use correct sentence structure, including appropriate word order and punctuation in order to ensure clarity of meaning;
- revise effectively one’s written compositions by applying the rules of grammar in order to identify and correct grammatical errors; and
- use an American English dictionary for checking spelling, plural forms, and verb forms.
