Prerequisites:  Grade of “C” or better in HSC 161

Course Description: During the semester, the student works in the student clinic atEssexCountyCollege or in a field placement (externship) applying basic skills, while incorporating advanced techniques learned throughout the program. As a carry-over from earlier clinical experience, students will have to demonstrate their ability to work independently in completing all aspects of therapeutic massage. Placement may take place in a hospital, chiropractic, orthopedic, or independent setting. Students will be responsible for completing on-goingSOAP charts and case notes. Students will be randomly evaluated by the field placement supervisor and the instructor and may receive evaluations from the clients who receive their services.

Course Goals: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:

  1. apply basic and advanced Swedish massage techniques in a clinical setting; and
  2. act professionally while completing the required massage practice at an appropriate health-care facility (an externship) or at the Essex County College student clinic.
