Course Description: This course is designed to create a technical and conceptual foundation for further studies in electronic music.  Students will learn and demonstrate basic compositional techniques including form, melody, rhythm, and harmony as they are introduced to the Musical Instrument Digital Interface and Digital Audio and its applications.  Also, the student will demonstrate the ability to use computers and software to create and perform music as the course includes the MIDI interface (Musical Instrument Digital Interface), sequencing and notation, and sampling used to produce musical projects.  Emphasis will be on developing skills appropriate to the beginning student for the purpose of creative and technical expression.

Course Goals: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following:

  1. build a MIDI and digital audio studio; and
  2. create music use software including ProTools, Logic, and Garageband.
