Why major in Cybersecurity & Network Technology?

The rapid growth and development of mobile computing and internet technologies has also raised concerns in cybersecurity and networking. The A.A.S. degree program in Cybersecurity & Network Technology was created to meet the changing needs of the Information Technology industry and provide students with the technical expertise to administer computer networks and secure scalable connected networks.

If I major in Cybersecurity & Network Technology, can I transfer to an upper-division college or university?

Although the A.A.S. in Cybersecurity & Network Technology degree program is job-oriented and not designed for transfer to a bachelor’s degree program, four-year colleges and universities may apply some or all of the courses you have taken towards a bachelor’s degree depending upon their program requirements.

Are there any requirements I must satisfy before I start taking courses in my major?

Based on your placement test scores, you may have to take developmental courses in reading, English, and/or mathematics before taking the core curriculum courses in your major.

How long will it take for me to complete this degree?

If you do not need developmental coursework and you register for an average of 16 credits each semester, you should be able to complete the program in two years. You may shorten the amount of time required by taking courses in the summer sessions.

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to:
  • Describe and analyze the hardware and software components of a network and the interrelations;
  • Explain networking protocols and their hierarchical relationships of hardware and software;
  • Compare protocol models and select appropriate protocols for a particular design;
  • Explain concepts and theories of networking and apply them to various situations, classifying networks, analyzing performance and implementing new technologies;
  • Manage multiple operating systems, systems software, network services and security. Evaluate and compare systems software and emerging technologies;
  • Develop solutions for networking and security problems, balancing business concerns, technical issues and security;
  • Identify infrastructure components and the roles they serve, and design infrastructure including devices, topologies, protocols, systems software, management and security;
  • Use appropriate resources to stay abreast of the latest industry tools and techniques, analyzing the impact on existing systems and applying to future situations;
  • Explain the concepts of confidentiality, availability and integrity in Information Assurance, including physical, software, devices, policies and people and analyze these factors in existing system and design implementations;
  • Cite and comply with relevant industry and organizational codes of conduct and ethics; and
  • Effectively communicate technical information verbally, in writing, and in presentations.
