Why major in Database System Administration?

Database administrators are the creative minds behind computer programs. They use specialized software to store, organize data, and generate various reports by querying from databases. The Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts that the demand for database administrators will increase by 15% from 2012 to 2022 due to the large increase in the demand for data needs of companies across the economy. The Database System Administration academic certificate program introduces students to the fundamentals of database management technology, design, development, and administration. Students will gain experience working in distributed, client-server, desktop and virtualized environments. The Database System Administration certificate program is a one-year certificate program offering a mixture of general education, professional courses, and technical experiences at local facilities. Successful completion helps students prepare for important information technology (IT) professional certificates such as MCSA and SQL Server certification.

If I major in Database System Administration, can I transfer to an upper-division college or university?

The Database System Administration certificate program is  career oriented program. Courses completed as part of this academic certificate program can be applied toward associate’s degree programs at ECC. Most or all credits earned in certificate programs that are applied to associates’ degree programs transfer to four-year institutions. Are there any requirements I must satisfy before I start taking courses in my major?

Based on your placement test scores, you may have to take developmental courses in reading, English, and/or mathematics before taking the core curriculum courses in your major.

How long will it take for me to complete this program?

If you do not need developmental coursework and you register for an average of 15 credits each semester, you can complete the academic certificate in one year. Part-time students can complete the program in two years.

Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to:
  • Apply design theory to a database using database management systems;
  • Design, maintain, and monitor database server architecture including performance optimization to meet system requirements;
  • Design, develop, and implement a major software-based project;
  • Test software systems with specification, performance, maintenance, and quality requirements;
  • Apply software engineering theory, principles, tools, and processes, as well as the theory and principles of computer science and mathematics, to the development and maintenance of complex software systems; and
  • Evaluate the impact of potential solutions to software engineering problems in a global society, using knowledge of contemporary issues and emerging software engineering trends, models, tools, and techniques.
