Newark Mayor Luis A. Quintana and the Newark Municipal Council hosted the celebration, joined by such luminaries as the Three Kings themselves, Santa Claus and his elves, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Dora the Explorer, Batman, and special guest Steve Weatherford, punter for the New York Giants. Weatherford signed autographs and helped distribute toys to the children, ages six months to 12 years.
In some European and many Spanish-speaking countries, Three Kings Day is known as Little Christmas or the Feast of the Epiphany, and includes a day of gift giving for children. It marks the end of the legendary visit of the Three Kings where they presented gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. It is also the offcial end of the Christmas holiday season.
Mayor Quintana also presented Steve Weatherford with a Key to the City in recognition of his commitment to philanthropy, humanitarian work, and dedication in collecting and distributing toys to local children.
The event was co-sponsored by the Prudential Foundation, PSE&G, Verizon and the Three Kings Fundraiser Committee President J. Kenneth Pagano.
