The launching of the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA) has produced a “Why do I have to sign up?” response among many young and healthy Americans. Through an interactive approach to this important issue, The Positive Community magazine through its Newark Leadership Roundtable Series will bring home the importance of adequate health coverage to the so-called Millennials or Generation Y, students and young adults ages 18 to 34. Essex County College will host the healthcare roundtable on Wednesday, February 26 at its Newark campus. The program is sponsored by Barnabas Health and will feature panel discussions on the impact and accessibility of the ACA on Millennials, as well as mental health issues versus the social ills that affect this age group. Comprehensive information for signing up for ACA and what’s available in coverage packages, including mental health treatments, will be available. The free event is open to students 18 and older, and the general public.
WHO: Keynote speakers will be political activist Kevin Powell, also known for his appearance on MTV’s The Real World: New York, and Dr. Corey Hebert, “Doctor for the People” who is a frequent guest on the Dr. Oz Show. The moderator for the conference will be Michellene Davis, Senior Vice President for Policy Development and Government Affairs at Barnabas Health.
The Essex County College Hip Hop Student Association will perform Spoken Word at intervals throughout the event.
