ECC swept the Region XIX Division II basketball championships Saturday as both the men and women captured regional titles. The games were held at Brookdale Community College.
The men’s team successfully defended its Region XIX title with a 99-74 victory over Raritan Valley Community College. With the win, Coach Corey Lowery’s team punched its ticket to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) national championships March 18-22 in Danville, Ill.
Dion Rogers led the 25-5 Wolverines with 33 points on Saturday. Samson Akano scored 26, while Chris Compas chipped in with 19.
The 21-10 Lady Wolverines beat Manor College 52-49 to win its regional title. Next up for Coach Robyn Burton’s squad is the District N/O championships March 8-9 in Franklin, Mass. ECC’s semi-final game is March 8, 2 p.m. against host Dean College. The winners of the district round advance to the women’s NJCAA championships.
In the women’s game, the 21-10 Lady Wolverines were led in scoring by Shanique Grave’s 21 points. Emma Block had 19 in the win.
