It came down to the final minute before the clock ran out on a memorable men’s basketball season. The Wolverines fell 71-67 to Phoenix College in the title game of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II basketball championship. The game was played March 22 in Danville, Illinois.
Coach Corey Lowery’s team (28-6 overall) had a 14 game winning streak that carried Essex through Region XIX and the semi-finals of the NJCAA championship bracket. ECC 3-1 was in the tournament following the 75-67 semi-final win on March 21 over Wake Tech Community College of North Carolina. This was the farthest the Essex basketball team had ever advanced in the NJCAA tournament.
“We are just so proud of the team and coaches for the phenomenal job they did in getting to the finals,” said Acting Executive Dean of Student Services Susan Mulligan. “It was a testament to their incredible hard work and dedication.”
Dion Rogers and Chris Compas were named to the All-Tournament team.
