The nationally-ranked Essex County College men’s basketball team successfully defended its Region 19 title with a pair of victories in the regional tournament on March 11-12.

Currently ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Division II, Coach Corey Lowery’s squad stands at 29-1 on the season. The team is now heading into the NJCAA national championships starting March 21 in Danville, Illinois. The team defeated Lackawanna College 95-72 and then Rowan College at Burlington County 86-70. Both games were held at the County College of Morris.

In the title game, six Wolverines scored in double figures. Frank Rokins led the balanced scoring with 15 points. He was followed by Juwan Jones and Elijah Bush with 13 points each; Ahmad Sherman with 12; Keyshawn McMahon with 11 and Khyri Stewart with 10.

The men’s pairings will be announced shortly.

While the women wait for their next opponent at the NJCAA Division II championship, also starting March 21, three Lady Wolverines received Division II All Region 19 Team honors. Kim Richburg and Tashay Jackson made First Tem while Cherelle Cox was recognized on the Region 10 Second Team.

Stacey Townsend’s 26-5 Lady Wolverines had captured the District N title earlier this month to advance to the national tournament to be held in Harrison, Arkansas.

The women’s pairings will also be announced shortly.
