Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams begin play in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II National Championships on Wednesday, March 22. The men’s tournament is in Danville, Illinois, while the women are in Harrison, Arkansas.
The first game of the day for Essex features Coach Stacey Townsend’s 26-5 Lady Wolverines facing Mesa (Arizona) Community College at noon. Mesa comes into the tournament with a 22-8 record.
At 2 p.m., the men’s team, currently sporting a 29-1 record, will square off against Grand Rapids (Michigan) Community College. Grand Rapids has a 20-12 record on the season. The Wolverines are coached by Corey Lowery.
Kim Richburg, averaging 20points a game, is the leading scorer for the Lady Wolverines. Also averaging double figures are teammates Ta’Shay Jackson and Chervelle Cox, averaging 18.6 and 13.4 points respectively.
Five members of the men’s team average double figures, led by Juwan Jones with 16.1 points per contest. Elijah Bush scores 12.8 points per contest, followed by Quadry Calloway with 12.4 and Frank Rokins with 10.4.
