Three of Essex County College’s newest Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree programs are in some of the most in-demand technology fields. Students who graduate with degrees in Cybersecurity & Network Technology, Health Information Technology, or Software Development Technology are equipped to immediately enter the workforce.
“These three majors are especially good for students seeking reliable career options,” said Dr. Jill Stein, Dean of STEM & Health Sciences. All three majors are offered through the College’s Division of Mathematics, Engineering Technologies & Computer Sciences.
While Cybersecurity is the most popular of the programs, all three are “definitely high demand fields,” said Dr. Stein.
All three of the A.A.S programs were originally launched at Essex through a $2.75 million U.S. Department of Labor grant as part of the federal government’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training program. Cybersecurity & Network Technology and Software Development Technology are also offered as Academic Certificates. The Health Information Technology degree is a dual admission program with neighboring NJIT.
Cybersecurity majors can find employment in a wide range of areas with both governmental agencies and the private sector. Software Development majors will be able to work for companies that create interactive Web applications and design and develop mobile applications for the Android platform. Health Information Technology majors find careers with hospitals, long-term care facilities and other healthcare providers handling electronic medical file storage and patient management.
Each of these programs requires students to take CSC 104 – Network Fundamentals, which will be offered during the upcoming Spring semester on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10 to 11:20 a.m. This course covers a wide range of hardware and network operating system components and is open to everyone. No pre-requisites are required.
