Lady Wolverines – Region 19 champions

The Essex County College Lady Wolverines soccer team is Region 19 champions for 2017. The men’s Cross-Country team also won the Region 19 title. Both the men’s Soccer team and women’s Cross-Country squad finished second in the Region 19 tournaments.

 

Coach Monique Edouard’s Lady Wolverines beat the County College of Morris 3-1 and then Sussex County Community College to win the Region 19 title. The team scored a thrilling 1-0 win over Sussex in the finals. Sharain Cummings scored the lone goal of the game off an assist from Tia Henry. Goalie Nicolette Craig picked up the shutout.

 

Next up for the Lady Wolverines is a November 4 date with Monroe Community College of Rochester, New York, in the National Junior College Athletic Association District E semi-finals. The game is set for 1:30 p.m. at Sussex County Community College in Newton. The finals (Sussex and ASA College of New York are the other semi-finalists) will be held at 11 a.m. November 5 also at Sussex.

 

Orville Dixon led the cross-country team to the regional title with his first place finish. Oneil Williams, Davian Baker, Nathan Brown and Terry Charles finished seventh through 10th to help propel Essex to the title. Deshawn Craig coaches both Cross-Country teams.

 

Men’s Soccer Coach William “Ricky” Hill’s team suffered a tough 3-1 loss in the Region 19 finals after advancing with a 2-1 semifinal win over Rowan College at Burlington County.

 

Coach Craig’s women’s Cross-Country team was led by Andrea Foster with her second place finish. Milagros Reyes came in eighth for Essex.

 

Region and Conference Honors for Soccer Players

A number of players on both soccer teams were recognized on the Region 19 and Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) 1st and 2nd Teams.

 

For the men, Walter Hernandez (forward), Keeroy Lionel (midfielder) and Stephon Smith (defender) made 1st Team all-Region while Noelson Charles (forward) and Chadwayne Johnson (midfielder) were selected to the 2nd Team. All those players named GSAC 1st Team as well.

 

On the women’s side, Lyla Lionel (left wing) and Nicolette Craig (goalkeeper) were named to the All Region 1st Team as well as All GSAC 1st Team. All Region 19 2nd teamers are Tia Henry (forward), Sharain Cummings (center) and Shanearay Wilkins (forward). Tia, Sharian and Shanearay were joined on the GSAC 2nd Team by Samira Semilovic (center).
