Dwayne Henderson and Pyetra Camargo are both officers in Essex County College’s Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. The Newark residents are also both the College’s latest students to be named to the All USA-New Jersey Community College Academic Team.

The sophomores will be recognized next May 3 by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges and state Legislature on Phi Theta Kappa Day in May. They are also eligible for a number of national scholarships through the All USA-Coca Cola Foundation. Nominees are also eligible for the All USA National Academic Team.

Dwayne, president of the College’s Alpha Theta Theta Chapter of the honor society, is a Business Administration major on target to graduate next spring. Pyetra, who serves as the chapter’s vice president for Fellowship, is majoring in Criminal Justice.

“When I heard the news (from College chapter advisor Lynn Wilson), it was an extremely pleasant surprise,” said Dwayne, who is interested in pursuing entrepreneurship after earning his Associate degree. “I do like how things are progressing for me here at Essex.” He is looking at Columbia University, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Montclair State University as likely transfer options for next fall. Dwayne said he is busy preparing the Phi Theta Kappa chapter for the upcoming regional and international conferences early next year.

“I was very happy when I heard; it is such as honor being recognized,” said Pyetra. She has maintained a perfect 4.0 average in her first two Essex semesters and is expected to earn her Associate degree in December of 2018. Pyetra now has an interest in politics and government after spending a week this past June at the NEW Leadership™ New Jersey program, run by the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP). She already returned to the Center in New Brunswick last month where she met White House correspondent April Ryan of the American Urban Radio Networks. Pyetra is currently considering Drew University and Amherst College as transfer options.
