College Choice has designated Essex County College the 50th Best Community College for 2017. Essex was the only New Jersey two-year school to be ranked by the Eugene, Oregon-based independent publication that helps students and their families find their right school.
There are more than 1,400 community colleges in the nation, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
“For Essex County College, this is a unique 50 year anniversary achievement; a national model for a continuing commitment to urban higher education,” said Sanjay Ramdath, Executive Director for Enrollment Management. He added that it is an appropriate ranking as Essex celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
In devising its rankings, College Choice used an evenly based formula of quality, reputation, affordability, value and satisfaction in rating the schools. “In the end, we believe these 50 schools represent the best of what can be a wise decision for many prospective college students,” College Choice stated on its website.
The site also noted that by definition, community colleges are affordable, inclusive, part of the community, convenient and affordable.
Essex County College President Anthony E. Munroe said Essex meets all of the criteria to be ranked. “This ranking was accomplished through the hard work of all our faculty, administration, staff and, of course, our students.”
Dr. Robert Spellman is one of the College’s longest tenured professors, serving 50 years. He termed the ranking “a momentous outcome. We have had 50 years of consistent challenges, obstacles and tremendous achievements and this ranking is another major achievement for us.”
