SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA FOR ECC GRADUATES
General Statement
Essex County College awards annual scholarships to graduating students
who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and who plan to
continue their education at a four-year college/university. The
scholarships vary in monetary value and criteria. Each is listed below.
A. ACACIA SCHOLARSHIP
The Acacia Scholarship was established by the African-American
History Month Committee at ECC to assist deserving graduates who plan to
continue their education at a four-year institution. The recipient of
the award has demonstrated academic promise and performance, financial
need, and active community involvement.
B. ADMINISTRATIVE ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Essex County College Administrative Association Scholarship is
awarded annually to a member of the graduating class of the college who
plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree.
This endowment is awarded to a student who:
- Has maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average.
- Has been accepted for admission to a four-year college or
university.
- Demonstrates intellectual curiosity, professional promise and
leadership qualities.
- Has been active in extracurricular activities for the past two
years.
C. DINGLER FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Dingler Foundation Scholarship was established by the Trustees of
The Christian and Teresa M. Dingler Foundation. Its purpose is to
provide financial assistance to promising but needy residents of Essex
County who have demonstrated the ability to succeed academically and
plan to continue their education upon graduation from Essex County
College. The award carries a monetary value of $500.00 for each
recipient.
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- For students graduating from Essex County College who have been
accepted to a four-year college to continue their studies in a medium or
high-technology program.
- Demonstrated academic promise and performance.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
- Resident of Essex County.
D. E.O.F. SCHOLARSHIP
The E.O.F. Scholarship is given to the graduating E.O.F. student(s)
who has completed a full-time credit load each semester with a GPA of
2.0 or better, maintained an overall GPA of 3.0, participated in E.O.F.
required activities and has participated in college and community
services. In addition, the student(s) must submit a personal written
assessment of how the E.O.F. Program has been of assistance to them
while attending Essex County College.
E. FACULTY ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
Each year the ECCFA Scholarship fund provides scholarships on behalf
of the Faculty to outstanding students. Each Faculty Scholar or Faculty
Returning Scholar receives a monetary award presented at the May Award
Ceremony. The students are carefully selected by the scholarship
committee using the guidelines listed below.
- Minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Graduating student: The student must be certified eligible for
graduation by his/her department and the college.
- Returning Faculty Scholars: The student must have completed 30
credits of non-developmental course work (courses numbered 100 or
higher) required by his/her curriculum.
- The candidate represents in character and achievement those
qualities which the ECCFA Scholarship Committee extols as an exemplary
student worthy of public recognition.
- Faculty testimony must state in writing that the candidate is a
student who is not only an exemplary scholar, but also makes a
contribution to the scholarly pursuits of other students.
Note 1: The
selection of a Faculty Scholar or Faculty Returning Scholar shall not be
subject to applicants.
Note 2: Every effort will be made to distribute scholarships equally
among the departments/divisions of the college, given the above
criterion are met, so as to not prejudice or omit any area.
Note 3: The number and value of the scholarships awarded each year
will be determined by the ECCFA Scholarship committee subject to the
following restrictions:
3.1 A minimum of one scholarship will be awarded.
3.2 The cumulative value of all scholarships awarded in any year
shall not exceed the interest/dividends earned by the fund during the
preceding 12 months or 25 percent (25%) of the growth of the fund
during the same period, which-ever is greater.
F. FASHION ENTERTAINMENT BOARD SCHOLARSHIP
The Fashion Entertainment Board Scholarship is presented to a
graduate who has been active in the Fashion Club as well as other
college and community activities. The recipient has to demonstrate the
ability to succeed academically and plans to continue his/her education.
G. FLORENCE WIDEMAN BEY SCHOLARSHIP
The Florence Wideman Bey Scholarship for a graduating E.O.F. student
is awarded annually to a member of the graduating class who plans to
pursue a baccalaureate degree.
The scholarship is awarded to the student who complies with the
following specifics:
- City of Newark resident.
- Must be at least 35 years old.
- Active in extracurricular activities within the college.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities within the community.
- Has been accepted for admission to a four-year accredited
college/university.
- Must be a female representative of the E.O.F. majority student
population.
Also, student must submit a personal essay on how the E.O.F. Program
has prepared him/her to attend a four-year college/university; including a
brief statement regarding personal philosophy on life. Essay should be a
minimum of one page, two pages maximum (8 1/2” x 11” typed).
H. JOHN R. WOOD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
(Formally Martin Luther King, Jr. Award)
The library scholarship has been renamed the John R. Wood Memorial
Scholarship in honor of the college’s first Acquisition Librarian. The
award will be presented to a student who plans to continue his/her
education beyond the Associate degree and demonstrates a sincere interest
in humanitarian endeavors. The minimum amount is $300.00
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- Minimum GPA of 3.0.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Proof of acceptance to an accredited institution.
- Completion of an essay on a topic to be announced by the library.
I. KANDICE DICKINSON “WOMAN OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARD”
The Kandice Dickinson “Woman of Achievement Award” was established in
April 1983 by Mrs. Kandice Dickinson to provide financial assistance to
a single female parent who plans to continue her education at a
four-year college.
Its purpose is to recognize an outstanding woman graduate who
possesses strong and creative leadership and who has maintained a 3.0
GPA and resides in the City of Newark.
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- Active community service.
- Acceptance to a four-year institution.
- Minority female.
- Permanent resident.
- Single, head of household.
J. THE LEAGUERS, INC. AWARD
The Leaguers, Inc. Scholarship Fund was established in August 1977 by
the late Dr. Reynold E. Burch. Founders of The Leaguers, Inc. of Newark,
N.J., Dr. and Mrs. Burch always promoted self esteem in our youth and
fostered education. The purpose of this scholarship award is to provide
access to higher education for needy and deserving African-American
students who have demonstrated the ability to succeed academically and
upon graduation from Essex County College. The Leaguers application must
be submitted. The award carries a monetary value of $500.00 and is
presented by The Leaguers, Inc.
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- Demonstrated academic promise and performance.
(Minimum GPA of 3.20)
- African-American male of female.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent resident.
- Demonstrated financial need.
- Demonstrated community involvement.
- Proof of acceptance into a four-year institution.
- New Jersey resident.
K. PHI THETA KAPPA PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Phi Theta Kappa Presidential Scholarship is presented to a member
of Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society for two-year college
students.
L. PUERTO RICAN HERITAGE/ANDRES V. CUBERO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The PRH/AVC Scholarship is available to Essex County College students
of Puerto Rican or Latin American Heritage. The scholarship was
established by The Puerto Rican Heritage Month Committee at Essex County
College. Its purpose is to provide financial assistance to those who
have demonstrated scholastic achievement, community involvement and have
affirmed their commitment to further their formal education through
enrollment in a college or university.
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- Must have a GPA of 2.75 or better.
- Demonstrated commitment and involvement to Essex County College
and/or the community.
- A graduating student earning an Associate Degree.
- Must be a continuing student at a four-year college.
Applicants must submit:
- An application.
- A 250 word essay. (Should reflect academic and community
involvement.)
- An Essex County College official transcript and two letters of
recommendation.
a. One must be from an Essex County College faculty or staff member; and
b. Community leader/employer/church.
- An acceptance letter from a four-year college by September 1 of the
awarded year.
M. RONALD N. PALMERI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Ronald N. Palmeri Memorial Scholarship is presented to a graduate
who has maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average and plans to
continue his/her education at a four-year institution.
N. SCUORZO/WEBER ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
The Scuorzo/Weber Academic Excellence Scholarship is awarded annually
by an anonymous donor to a member of the graduating class of Essex
County College who plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree, or is in a
terminal Associate degree program which has no logical Bachelor’s degree
procession.
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- The graduate with the highest GPA who has been accepted for
admission to a four-year institution Bachelor’s degree program or is in
a terminal Associate degree program which has no logical Bachelor’s
degree procession.
- Financial need shall not be a factor in any way.
- If there is a tie, the winner will be selected by lot.
The Scholarship Committee will determine whether or not there is
reasonably available to the student a “logical Bachelor’s degree
procession.”
O. SIDNEY JOHNSON/ARTHUR WILLIAMS AWARD
The Alpha Phi Alpha Lambda Chapter of the Fraternity located in
Newark, established in 1982 the Sidney Johnson/Arthur Williams Annual
Award, in 1982.
The grant is awarded to a graduating science major achieving the
highest overall grade point average in his/her graduating class.
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- Restricted to minority students majoring in either Biology,
Engineering, Nursing and/or related science programs.
- Demonstrated academic promise and performance.
(Minimum GPA of 3.20)
- Involved in extracurricular activities while in attendance at the
college.
- Two letters of recommendation from faculty.
- Participation in commencement exercises.
- Interview by Alpha Phi Alpha.
P. SOCIAL WORK STUDENT ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Essex County College Social Work Student Association scholarship
is awarded to a member of the graduating class of the college who plans
to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
This scholarship is awarded to a student who:
- Has been an active member of the Social Work Student Association.
- Who is completing a degree with either a Human & Social Services or
a Social Sciences major.
- Has attained at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
Q. STUDENT GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP
The requirements are as follows:
- Must have a GPA of 2.5 or better.
- A recommendation from club/organization advisor including positions
held (if any) and degree of involvement.
- A typed essay not to exceed 300 words on the following topics:
a. Describe how one can achieve academic excellence and contribute
towards student life and activities; or
b. How has Essex County College affected your outlook on life.
Executive officers of Student Government are not eligible for this
scholarship.
R. TECHNICAL TRAINING PROJECT, INC. ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Technical Training Project, Inc. Achievement Award is presented
to graduates of the Technical Training Project who have continued their
education at Essex County College and are now graduating with Associate
degrees in the sciences.
S. WEST ESSEX CAMPUS ADVISORY BOARD SCHOLARSHIP
The West Essex Campus Advisory Board established a scholarship in
November, 1990 to provide financial assistance to a student graduating
from the West Essex Campus. The award carries a monetary value to be
determined annually.
The criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
- Demonstrated academic promise and performance.
- Eligible student with highest GPA ranking graduating from the West
Essex Campus of Essex County College.
- Completed 30 or more credits at the West Essex Campus
toward an Associate degree.
- Proof of acceptance into a four-year institution of higher
education.
- U.S. citizenship.
- Demonstrated service to school and/or community.
This scholarship does not require financial documentation.
MARY B. AND REYNOLD E. BURCH SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The Reynold E. and Mary B. Burch Endowment Scholarship Fund
awards $1000.00 annually to a graduating minority African-American
student who has been accepted at a four-year college, university
or professional school to pursue the arts or allied health. A
prospective applicant should demonstrate exceptional acumen,
talent, skill and potential in the arts or allied health fields.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
The Humanities Division faculty members have established an
Academic Achievement Committee which awards scholarships to
graduating students for academic excellence. The award carries a
monetary value of $500.00. In order to be considered, candidates
should have a high or drastically improved GPA over the last six
consecutive semesters.
Candidates should also demonstrate:
- Voluntary work in some capacity at ECC.
- Leadership development and role in dome club at ECC.
- Acceptance at a four-year college or university in the fall
semester.
HON. PATRICIA JULIANO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Hon. Patricia Juliano Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a
graduating ECC student majoring in Humanities or Social Sciences.
The minimum criteria are as follows:
- A single mother.
- Active involvement in civic advocacy or political causes.
- Maintain a 2.5 GPA or better.
