SPORT: Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field
Hometown: Kearny, New Jersey
Coming back for her second year with the Lady Wolverines, Renata Martin will continue to run long distance for Essex County College's cross country and track and field team. Last year she competed in the 3000m, 5000m, and 10,000m races. Her determination to succeed and hard work was what got her through the year. She came to the team as the slowest runner, however she proved to the team that one could succeed despite their athletic abilities through hard work. She ran personal bests every meet and continuingly dropped her times. Renata's biggest achievement was when she was nominated a 2010 NJCAA All-Academic American award with a 4.0 GPA.
This November 6th, Renata Martin will be running in the NYC marathon to raise funds for Pediatric Cancer Research for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She dedicated her whole summer to studying, running, and fundraising for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Renata says, "If it wasn't for Coach Smart and the people in my team who believed in me last year, I wouldn't be doing this. Coach Smart has taught me that there is no limit to what you can do in running as long as you believe in yourself. His lesson has stayed with me and has given me the confidence to take the challenge of 26.2 miles this November. He has supported me and allowed me to train for the marathon while training for cross country, and I couldn't be more thankful for having him as my coach."
Renata Martin will run this year for Essex County College's cross country team before running her first marathon. Her goal for cross country is to win Regionals and to make it to nationals during the indoor and outdoor track season.
