The Secret Behind Their Smiles

The partnership between Essex County College’s Business Division and the Greater Newark Convention and Visitors Bureau (GNCVB) has already changed the perception and lives of Essex students Francesca Ayensu and Louise Nichols.

Francesca enrolled at Essex without a clear career pathway. After going through advisement and counselling, she decided to pursue her Associate in Applied Science in the Hospitality Management program.

Soon after entering the program, she applied and received a scholarship, and a paid internship at GNCVB. In her own words, Francesca sees ECC as the best place to start a higher education due to its extensive support system and opportunities.

“I had no idea about the support system the College has to offer until I enrolled and decided to open up. Through ECC, I gained a scholarship, a paid internship for a year and now a full time job with GNCVB as I continue to pursue my degree,” Francesca said.

Louise Nichols, an Accounting major, had sought practical experience through volunteerism where she can hone her theoretical skills in preparation for the labor market. Like Francesca, the Business Division connected Louise to the GNCVB where she is currently working part time and learning new accounting skills.

When the Acting Dean of Liberal Arts & Business, Dr. Augustine A. Boakye, visited the students on November 20, he was impressed with the positive feedback he received from Mrs. Karin Aaron, the President and CEO of GNCVB regarding the students.

“I am truly impressed with the teachable environment you have created for our students at GNCVB,” he told Mrs. Aaron. The challenging work combined with the structured performance process reinforces what our students learn in the classroom. ECC truly appreciates your support and looks forward to a strategic long-term partnership with GNCVB,” Dr. Boakye added.

Earlier in the Fall 2019 semester, GNCVB expanded its partnership with the College’s Business Division by offering $1,500 to two Hospitality Management students, David Pezak and Christelle Bourdeau in support of their educational goals.

GNCVB is the official destination marketing organization for the city of Newark, New Jersey. It is committed to creating economic growth and increased employment through marketing to increase the length of stay and per capita spending of overnight visitors to Newark.
