Essex County College is a comprehensive community college offering multiple resources for academic and career growth. The college was established in 1966 and opened facilities in downtown Newark in 1968. In 1976, Essex relocated to its current 22-acre main campus in the city’s University Heights district.

Today the main Newark campus includes the three-block long A. Zachary Yamba Building, Gymnasium/Child Development Center complex, Center for Technology, Clara E. Dasher Student Center, and the Center for Health Sciences. The College also operates a thriving West Essex branch campus in West Caldwell, Police Academy in Cedar Grove, and extension centers throughout Essex County. Two of these extension programs are located in the City of Newark at the Ironbound and FOCUS centers.

Essex currently enrolls more than 15,000 students pursuing credit course work in academic disciplines. Thousands of others are enrolled in special programs attaining basic skills proficiency and literacy in the English language, short-term job training, or pursuing numerous continuing education opportunities for personal and professional development.
