Essex County College is a comprehensive community college offering multiple resources for academic and career growth. The college was established in 1966 and opened facilities in downtown Newark in 1968. In 1976, Essex relocated to its current 22-acre main campus in the city’s University Heights district.
Today the main Newark campus includes a three-block long megastructure and gymnasium/child care center complex, a Center for Technology, the Clara E. Dasher Student Center, and the Center for Health Sciences. The college also operates a thriving West Essex branch campus in West Caldwell, the Essex County College Police Academy in Cedar Grove, and extension centers throughout Essex County. Two of these extension programs are located in the City of Newark at the Ironbound and FOCUS centers.
Essex currently enrolls more than 15,000 students who are pursuing credit course work in academic disciplines. Thousands of others are enrolled in special programs to attain basic skills proficiency and literacy in the English language, short-term job training, or to pursue numerous continuing education opportunities for personal and professional development.
