More than 5% of Essex County College students are international. We are proud to be the college of choice for students from over 60 countries. ECC is always looking to help new international scholars study in the United States.

Students must earn a passing score on either the IELTS or TOEFL English proficiency exams before being admitted to ECC. We recommend that incoming students work on these exams before the rest of their documentation.

A complete application package for international admission includes an application for admission, application fee, proof of high school graduation,  notarized affidavits of support, appropriate financial documentation and application for Form I-20.

International Student FAQ

Common questions for ECC students from all over the world.

Q. What is the deadline to apply for international students?

A. For Fall Semester admission, completed applications must be received by May 1.

For Spring Semester admission, completed applications must be received by August 1.

Be aware that the deadline to apply for international students is much earlier than for domestic students, because of the added processing time.

Q. Can I apply during summer sessions?

A. International student applications are not accepted during summer sessions. International students with F-class visas may not take classes during the summer semester.

Q. What English proficiency scores do I need to be eligible for admission?

A. The minimum required score varies depending on the type of test. Any of these tests are admissible, as long as the minimum score is met.

Required paper test score: 513

IELTS Minimum Scores

Required overall band score: 5.5

Q. Can I be admitted without taking either test?

A. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for students who:

  • have already completed a non-developmental English composition course from a regionally accredited U.S. college/university with a C grade or better, or
  • have an SAT score of 540 or higher in Critical Reading (old score), or a score of 500 in Reading and Writing (new score).

Q. Do you issue Form I-20 for ESL Studies?

A. You must submit your application for Form I-20 to ECC when you apply. However, ECC DOES NOT issue the form – you will receive it from an immigration official at your port of entry.
