Why ECC?
Essex County College welcomed the Water UP! Utility Pipeline Training Program with a kickoff event at its Newark campus on Sept. 29, 2025. The free program is offered in partnership with New Jersey American Water and runs through December 3, 2025.
The kickoff featured New Jersey American Water President Mark McDonough, along with company executives and staff, who joined ECC’s Training, Inc. division of Community, Continuing Education & Workforce Development. ECC President Dr. Augustine A. Boakye also addressed attendees, underscoring the College’s role in building career pathways for the community.
The Water UP! program provides 10 weeks of classroom instruction and hands-on training designed to prepare participants for entry-level roles in the water utility industry. Participants may also be eligible to receive a stipend during training, easing financial barriers to participation.
The curriculum covers water systems and distribution, field safety, and OSHA 30 certification. It also includes customer service, teamwork, financial literacy, Microsoft Office tools, and interview preparation. In addition, participants gain exposure to real-world operations through tours of New Jersey American Water facilities and on-the-job observation.
Upon completion, students will be ready for positions such as operations specialist, utility mechanic, or water quality and compliance technician. The program concludes with a Career Fair, connecting graduates directly with recruiters and hiring managers from New Jersey American Water and invited partners across the utility sector.
Launched in 2021, Water UP! is designed to open doors for individuals from underserved communities by providing both technical training and professional development. Partnering with Essex County College expands the program’s reach and creates new opportunities for Newark-area residents.
