ECC Celebrates the Contributions of Women Across the College

NEWARK, N.J. — Essex County College held its inaugural Women’s Achievement Luncheon Tuesday, March 25, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the fourth-floor multipurpose room at the Newark campus. The event honored the contributions of women across the college and brought together students, staff and faculty in celebration.

The luncheon was held in partnership with Community, Continuing Ed and Workforce Development, the ECC Administrative Association, Africana Institute, On-Campus Continuing Education, Student Life and Activities, Educational Opportunity Fund, the Haitian Student Association, Office of Human Resources, Phi Theta Kappa’s Alpha Theta Chapter and NJEA Pride.

“You deserve to be acknowledged,” said Angela McKinney, director of on-campus continuing education, addressing the room filled with women being celebrated.

“We have a strong area and strong women within ECC,” said Elvira Vieira, dean of community and continuing education. “Sometimes we have to take a moment and say thank you. As a woman working at ECC, I rely on a lot of strong women in my area and in my department. For me, and I know President Dr. Augustine A. Boakye would agree with me, that we thank you for all that you do.”

Judith Celestin, director of the Adult Learning Center, was presented with a token of appreciation by McKinney for her leadership in organizing the event. Artists featured in the campus gallery were also recognized for their contributions.

“Thank you for your contribution, for your artwork, they are amazing,” said Celestine. The exhibition runs through the end of the month.

Sharon McClain, adjunct professor and motivational speaker, was among the guest speakers and delivered a message of empowerment to the crowd.

“It’s time for us to stand up and take our place, and not be complacent about the things we want to do. It’s time for us to shine and deliver the most important person in the room. Don’t be afraid. Stand up, and rise and take your place.”

Dr. Natalie E. Roche, an obstetrician-gynecologist at University Hospital and a leading authority in women’s health, also offered remarks focused on purpose, perseverance and wellness.

“My life’s purpose is to promote health and wellness, and heal the sickness of the mind, body and spirit,” she said. She encouraged attendees to reflect on their own life’s mission amid changing and sometimes challenging times.

“If you do that, everything in your life will fall in line and life’s ups and downs you’ll be able to endure.”

She also emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with other women.

“Women are the ones holding up the world,” said Dr. Roche. “You must always keep females that are strong, regardless of your relationship status, in your life.”

Dr. Mamie Bridgeforth, chair of the social sciences division, reflected on the evolving role of women at the college over the past 52 years.

“When I look at you young people, and I say to myself it might not be what it used to be, but it’s had impact because we have more women than we had before in leadership roles. It’s wonderful.”

The event closed with a sense of reflection, gratitude and pride as the ECC community came together to honor the women who continue to shape its future.
