Why ECC?
Newark, N.J. – A team of Essex County College students took first prize in the 2025 New Jersey County College Case Competition, held April 4 at Rutgers Business School.
The five-member team — Khadijah Jalloh, Bryan Martinez, Sarah Newen, David Ortega and Adrian Ramirez Riveria — clinched the victory in the final round of the competition.
Teams from Hudson County Community College, Mercer County Community College and Middlesex College also participated in the contest, which challenged students to devise solutions for IKEA’s sustainability strategy. The ECC team presented a creative and well-researched proposal that earned them a $1,000 scholarship, awarded to students who continue their education at Rutgers Business School.
“Our students demonstrated exceptional teamwork and strategic thinking throughout the competition,” said Dr. John Olotewo, faculty mentor and professor of business at Essex County College. “They applied everything they’ve learned in the classroom and showed they’re ready to compete at the next level.”
The case competition offered students a chance to apply classroom knowledge to real-world business challenges. Participants also developed leadership and communication skills, gained resume-worthy experience, and made meaningful connections through professional networking.
The win reflects ECC’s continued commitment to student excellence, hands-on learning and academic competitiveness.
