Men & Women of Excellence (MWE) Scholars Program

This fall, the Men & Women of Excellence Scholars Program will be a part of an exciting nationwide research study, conducted by Essex County College and MDRC, a non-profit, non-partisan education and social policy research organization. The purpose of this study is to test whether Men & Women of Excellence helps eligible low-income students stay in school and graduate. Students in Men & Women of Excellence will receive personalized coaching, workshops, and even $50 per month during the fall and spring semesters when you stay enrolled full-time and meet with your coach twice a month. This program is designed to help you meet your goal of graduating with your associate degree within three years. If you want to graduate faster, this program could be for you!
Space in the program is limited and you have a 50% chance of getting in if you apply. This is because we are looking to fill two groups: the regular services group and the Men & Women of Excellence group. MDRC will measure the differences between the two groups of students to understand if the program is helping more students enroll in school full time, take more credits, and graduate faster.
To be eligible for the program, you must:
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be able to complete your degree or certificate in three years or less from the time you join the program
  • Have accumulated 24 or fewer college-level credits
  • Can enroll in at least 12 credits per fall and spring semesters
  • Complete your 2021/22 FAFSA application or HESAA application and qualify as a low-income student by receiving either federal or state financial assistance
  • Must meet with your success coach at least once a month

MWE is an equal opportunity grant-funded program. This program does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, or any other protected class under the law.
