ECC’s Office of Veterans Affairs (OVA) can help you break down your options, so you can make the best choice and get the most from the benefits you’ve earned.

Veterans FAQs

  • Chapter 33 – Post-9/11 GI Bill®
    • For veterans who served after September 10, 2001.
  • Chapter 30 – Montgomery GI Bill® (Active Duty)
    • For service members who paid $1,200 into the program during active duty.
  • Chapter 31 – Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)
    • For veterans with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10%.
  • Chapter 35 – Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA)
    • For dependents of veterans who died or have 100% VA disability rating.
  • Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill® (Selected Reserve)
    • For Reserve and National Guard members who meet certain service requirements.

Once your educational benefits are approved the VA will issue you a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). This document must be submitted to the Essex County College Military & Veterans Coordinator/SCO to use your educational benefits.

  • Members of the New Jersey National Guard are eligible for the NJNG Tuition Waiver Program
  • Members must request a Commanders Certificate for each semester they are enrolled
  • Members are required to apply for financial aid (FASFA), in order to submit for the NJNG Tuition Waiver.
  • Members must submit their approved Commanders Certificate (signed by both member & Commander) to the Military & Veterans Coordinator at Essex Count College.

  • For Army, Navy, Marine Corps, & Coast Guard use the following link to request transcripts be sent to Essex County College: Joint Services Transcript
  • For Air Force & Space Force use the following link to request transcripts be sent to Essex County College: Air University Transcripts

If you are asked to enter an email address for the transcripts to be sent to, use the following address: [email protected]

  • Request to have previous college transcripts sent to Essex County College (required for all students using VA educational benefits). Transcripts can be emailed, mailed, or hand delivered. All emails and mail must come directly from the prior college or an approved third-party website (Clearinghouse, Parchment). All hand delivered transcripts must be completely sealed and unopened from the previous college.

Department of Veterans Affairs will not pay for courses that have been previously taken and received a passing grade. Retaking classes to help improve a student’s GPA is prohibited. All students using VA educational benefits are required to be enrolled in a degree-seeking program.
